The name Illinois comes from an Algonquin word for "tribe of superior men." The Europeans Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette first visited what is now Illinois in 1673. French settlers eventually formed a settlement in 1699. By the end of the French and Indian Wars in 1763, Great Britain laid claim to the region. Illinois became the 21st state of the Union on December 3, 1818. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 led to the arrival of many settlers to the state.
Many famous personages have called the Prairie State their home, most notably former President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Other famous Illinois residents include author Ernest Hemingway, author Ray Bradbury, actor Bill Murray, poet Carl Sandburg, TV personality Oprah Winfrey, former President Ronald Reagan, actor Charlton Heston, musician Benny Goodman, and animator Walt Disney.
Illinois has hosted a rich history and a fine pedigree of talent and creativity, and its position as a major hub for biotechnology and life sciences promises an unrivaled future of success.
