Illinois prides itself on its extensive opportunities in education. The Prairie State ranks 5th in the United States in the number of higher education institutions. Of the public universities in Illinois, the University of Illinois
system is the state’s largest educator with over 70,000 students. It includes the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Springfield. The University of Chicago has been associated with 79 Nobel Prize winners and received over $375 million in research funding as of 2005. Northwestern University in Evanston continues its reputation of excellence as a key center for research. The Illinois Community College system provides students with 49 community colleges throughout the state.
Public education in the Prairie State is administered by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). There are over 1,000 public school districts with over 4,300 K-12 schools, and over 1,500 private schools. Illinois is ranked 29th in the nation for per-student spending.
