August is Psoriasis Awareness Month
The National Psoriasis Foundation sponsors Psoriasis Awareness Month which is dedicated
to raising awareness, educating the public and dispelling myths about psoriasis.
Psoriasis is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in the U.S., affecting as many as
7.5 million Americans. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals resulting
in red, scaly patches on the skin that bleed and itch. Psoriasis is not contagious.

LifeScience Moment: FDA hires temporary investigators to prevent polio vaccine black market.
On August 17, 1955, the FDA announced the hiring of 48 temporary investigators through an earmarked congressional appropriation. The temporary
investigators were hired to help prevent the black market diversion of the new Salk polio vaccine.
The polio vaccine, developed by Dr. Jonas Salk at the University of Pittsburgh, was announced April 12, 1955.
